IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO RESPECT THE PUBLIC? — MUG

A provocative Finch Files statement mug asking IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO RESPECT THE PUBLIC? — inspired by the renewed debate over Britain’s future relationship with the European Union and whether the country could ultimately consider rejoining.

The starting point is indisputable: on 23 June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union. 17,410,742 people voted Leave (51.9%) and 16,141,241 voted Remain (48.1%), on a turnout of 72.2%.

A decade later, that decision is once again at the centre of political debate. At Labour’s 2026 conference, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the current Brexit settlement had done “more harm than good” and announced that the Government would examine options for Britain’s long-term relationship with its European partners. He subsequently confirmed that those options could include rejoining the EU.

That represents a notable development from Labour’s published position, which states that Britain would remain outside the EU, single market and customs union while pursuing closer relations with Europe.

The Finch Files asks the question at the heart of the argument: whatever somebody’s view of Brexit today, what does respecting a democratic referendum require when public opinion, governments and circumstances can change over time?
