IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO PROTECT THE GREAT CRESTED NEWT? — MUG

A provocative Finch Files statement mug asking IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO PROTECT THE GREAT CRESTED NEWT? — inspired by the extraordinary twist in the battle over the proposed asylum accommodation site near Piddington, where evidence of protected wildlife, including great crested newts, could create a further obstacle for the Government’s plans.

Campaigners say ecological records indicate great crested newts and other protected species may be present on or around the proposed site, despite the Home Office ecological assessment reportedly finding no evidence of protected newts there. Their presence could require further assessment, mitigation or licensing and potentially provide grounds for a legal challenge. Great crested newts are legally protected under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.

The satire writes itself: after Piddington residents protested that their concerns over the proposed accommodation centre were not being listened to, could a protected newt ultimately prove harder for the Government to ignore? Residents have overwhelmingly opposed the proposal, including through their recent symbolic independence referendum.
