A provocative Finch Files statement mug asking IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO LOVE YOUR COUNTRY? — inspired by comments from Labour nature minister Jenny Riddell-Carpenter at the 2026 Labour Party Conference about competing visions of rural Britain.
Speaking at a conference fringe event, Riddell-Carpenter warned that the political “far right” could promote what she described as a nostalgic vision of Britain that “never really existed”, invoking the image of warm ale, a black Labrador by your feet and a country pub as part of that vision.
There was an additional twist. Earlier social-media posts showed Riddell-Carpenter herself enjoying elements of precisely this rural life: a 2015 photograph featured a black Labrador by a fireplace, while in 2024 she posted about returning to the Red Lion in Martlesham, a pub where she had previously worked, and pulling a pint behind the bar.
Riddell-Carpenter subsequently clarified her remarks, saying she did not believe country pubs or black Labradors were far-right. She said her argument concerned an idealised portrayal of rural life that overlooks genuine challenges facing rural communities, adding: “yes to pubs, pints and labradors.”
The Finch Files takes that controversy back to a simpler question: does enjoying the traditions, symbols and everyday culture associated with Britain say anything about somebody's politics — or can you simply love your country?
