A provocative Finch Files statement mug asking IS IT FAR-RIGHT TO FEEL LIKE A MUSHROOM? — inspired by the extraordinary events surrounding RAF Fairford and the questions that followed about what the public is told during an ongoing national-security investigation.

Five British men in their 20s were arrested near RAF Fairford on 27 September 2026 on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and, subsequently, preparation of a terrorist act. After extensive interviews and enquiries, all five were released on police bail subject to stringent conditions while the counter-terrorism investigation continued.

Police subsequently confirmed that no explosive devices were found in the three vans, although a quantity of petrol was recovered. Investigators have continued to examine multiple lines of inquiry, including whether individuals may have been acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state.

The familiar expression about being treated like a mushroom means being kept in the dark — and that is the point of the satire. With an active investigation necessarily limiting what authorities can publicly disclose, the Finch Files asks: when a major security incident happens on British soil, how much should the public expect to be told, and how quickly?
