The design caricatures the debate around taxation, welfare and personal responsibility, depicting taxpayers’ money being funnelled towards a household surrounded by references to Universal Credit, housing support, council tax support and disability benefits.

It is deliberately over the top. The question behind the caricature is more serious: what should Britain’s welfare system provide, who should it support, and where should society draw the line between a genuine safety net and long-term dependence on the state?
